Matriarch in Deutschland - Gruß aus Wiesbaden

One of our dreams is to collaborate with ALL the awesome independent female / feminist designers out there, which is why we were really excited when Wießbaden-based Galatea Ziss reached out to us. She had seen our feature in Missy Magazine and had the idea to pair our shoes with her Spring/Summer 2017 collection.  Galatea creates gorgeous custom-tailored and sustainably-sourced fashion in her atelier - a perfect fit for the Matriarch ethos! We sent her a pair of our Marlen Brogues which her boyfriend Konstantyn photographed beautifully with pieces from her collection.               Wießbaden is a town just west of Frankfurt that managed to escape WWII relatively unscathed. The city center is thus still filled with architecture dating...

Portugal Trip - Production No.1 - Photojournal

Production is on!  This journey has been an incredible ride- and also anything but predictable. So, while we didn't expect it to take so long to get footwear production ready, we are very glad that it is happening now, and can't wait to finally be shipping out our leather babies asap! The following is a small snapshot of the last week, checking up on production of shoes and socks and soaking in the 22 degree C sunshine 8-)   The factory.    We love the execution on the black shoes... thank you, Kickstarter backers, for convincing us to do it.     Lookin sharp together.    Pizza slices socks, coming right up.  Our logistics partners HUUB have grown a ton since the...

I remember when the Nike Presto came out. Nike Presto in "Brutal Honey" colorway. Actually, I remember the short period of time before it came out, when somehow, sometime I had sent 'them' (Nike) my mailing address and in return for my love they sent me a set of postcards with stylized characters announcing the Presto's imminent arrival. (Should we be sending y'all MATRIARCH postcards??) The postcards in question. This would have been around the year 2000... 7th grade. I remember trying to tell my friends and classmates about this cool new thing that was coming out but without visuals (I forgot the postcards at home), it was just an intangible concept. Imagine my frustration then, when, a few weeks later,...

Measuring leather

Developing our designs and our leather has taken over a year and we have learned a ton along the way. Here is a sneak peak into the world of leather and how to measure it.      Leather skins come in all sorts of different sizes and is generally priced by the square foot. If you've ever seen an entire leather skin, you're probably asking the same question we had: how is it possible to accurately measure such an irregularly shaped thing? Luckily there is what we have affectionately come to know as the WEGA CIAK machine. Basically, the leather is simply fed through a giant roller. As it rolls through, the area of the leather is scanned in all...
